What Is Easter?

Easter is the most sacred and joyful celebration in the Christian faith — the day we remember and proclaim that Jesus Christ, crucified and buried, rose from the dead on the third day, just as He promised. It is not merely a holiday of spring flowers and new beginnings; it is the very cornerstone of Christian belief, the event upon which all of history pivots.

The word Easter has long been associated with resurrection and new life, but its heart beats with a single, world-changing truth: the tomb is empty. Death has been defeated. The Son of God lives.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16 — KJV

The Story of Jesus

Jesus of Nazareth entered Jerusalem on what we now call Palm Sunday, welcomed by crowds who spread their garments and palm branches in the road. Yet within days, the same city would call for His crucifixion. He was betrayed by Judas Iscariot, arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, tried before Pontius Pilate, and sentenced to die on a cross — bearing the weight of every human sin upon His shoulders as He hung between heaven and earth on Calvary's hill.

"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." Isaiah 53:5 — KJV

After His death, Jesus was laid in a tomb sealed by a great stone, with Roman soldiers standing guard. It seemed as though darkness had won. But on the third day — the glorious morning we now call Easter Sunday — the stone was rolled away, and the tomb was found empty.

From the Cross to the Crown

Palm Sunday

Jesus enters Jerusalem in triumph. The crowd lays palms before Him, declaring Him King. He weeps over the city He loves.

The Last Supper

Jesus shares the Passover meal with His disciples, instituting the Lord's Supper — the bread and cup that symbolise His body and blood given for us.

Gethsemane

"Not my will, but thine, be done" (Luke 22:42). In agony, Jesus surrenders all to the Father and is arrested in the garden.

Good Friday

Jesus is crucified at Golgotha. At His death, the veil of the temple is torn in two — direct access to God is now open to all people.

Easter Sunday

He is risen! Mary Magdalene and the disciples find the empty tomb. The risen Christ appears to His followers, speaking peace and commissioning them to carry the good news to all nations.

"Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." John 11:25 — KJV

Why the Resurrection Matters

The Apostle Paul declared: "And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain" (1 Corinthians 15:14). The resurrection is not a footnote to the Christian story — it is the story. Everything rests on this one, magnificent truth.

Forgiveness

Through His death, Jesus paid the price for every sin. We are justified by faith in His sacrifice alone.

Victory

Death and the grave no longer have the final word. Christ conquered sin, Satan, and death itself.

New Life

Believers are raised with Christ — transformed, adopted as God's children, and filled with His Spirit.

Eternal Hope

Because He lives, we too shall live. The resurrection is the promise of everlasting life with God.

"O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?… But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Corinthians 15:55, 57 — KJV

Love That Could Not Be Contained

At the centre of Easter is not religion, not ritual — but love. A love so fierce and so complete that God Himself stepped into human flesh, walked among us, suffered with us, and died for us. And then rose, so that we might never be separated from Him again.

No matter where you have been, what you have done, or how far you feel from God — Easter is the announcement that the door is open, the price is paid, and you are welcome home.

"But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 — KJV

This is the Easter message in its purest form: You are loved beyond measure. You are not beyond reach. And the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in the life of every person who trusts in Him.

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Romans 10:9 — KJV
✦   A Prayer for Easter   ✦ Let Us Pray Together

Heavenly Father,

On this Easter day, we come before You with hearts full of wonder and gratitude. We stand in awe of what You have done — that You loved us so deeply, so completely, that You gave Your only Son to bear the weight of our sins upon that cross.

Lord Jesus, we thank You for Your obedience unto death, for Your sacrifice that tore the veil and opened the way to the Father. We thank You that the grave could not hold You — that on the third morning You rose in power and glory, conquering death and sealing our hope for eternity.

Holy Spirit, breathe new life into every heart that reads these words today. Where there is sorrow, bring Your comfort. Where there is doubt, bring faith. Where there is emptiness, fill it with the joy of the risen Christ.

We choose this day to fix our eyes on the empty tomb, knowing that the cross was not the end, but the beginning of our redemption. Let us walk in the newness of life You have purchased for us, carrying the light of Easter into every dark corner of this world.

We love You, Lord. We need You. We trust You. And we declare with all who have ever believed: He is risen — He is risen indeed.

Amen.
