Called the Children of God
A Love Beyond Understanding
There is a moment in Scripture where the Apostle John seems to stop and marvel at something almost too wonderful to put into words. He writes:
"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not."

Notice the phrase "what manner of love." John isn't simply stating a fact — he's stunned by it. He wants us to pause and really consider the weight of what has been given to us. We are not just forgiven. We are not just tolerated. We are called — named, identified, adopted — as children of God. And the only reason this is possible is love.
🌿 Not Earned, But Given
It would make sense if this identity were something we had to work for — perform well enough, live perfectly enough, prove ourselves worthy enough. But that is not the gospel. Scripture is clear that this status comes purely as a gift of grace, received through faith:
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
— John 1:12 (KJV)
The word "power" here can also be understood as "right" or "authority" — the legal standing to be called God's own. This wasn't something we generated ourselves. It was given, the moment we received Christ.
🏡 Adopted Into the Family
Paul deepens this picture using the language of adoption, a legal and permanent placing of someone into a family they were not born into:
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

Adoption in the ancient world was irrevocable. Once adopted, a child could not be un-adopted or disinherited on a whim. This is the security Paul wants us to feel — not the anxious hope of "maybe I belong," but the settled confidence of "Abba, Father."
💛 Because of Love
Ephesians ties this identity directly back to the heart of God, showing that our adoption was not an afterthought but something planned in love from the very beginning:
"Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace."
— Ephesians 1:5 (KJV)
And in case there is any doubt about what motivated this, John reminds us plainly:
"We love him, because he first loved us."
— 1 John 4:19 (KJV)
Our sonship isn't a reward for loving God well. It's the result of being loved first — completely, freely, before we had anything to offer in return.
🌸 Living as Beloved Children
Being called children of God isn't just a title to hold onto for comfort in hard moments (though it certainly is that). It's meant to shape how we live. Paul urges believers:
"Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us."
— Ephesians 5:1–2 (KJV)
Because we have received such love, we are invited to extend it — to walk as people who know whose family they belong to, carrying that same love out into the world.

A Closing Prayer
Father,
Thank You for calling me Your child — not because I earned it, but because You loved me first. Help me to grasp, even just a little more each day, what manner of love this is. When I feel unworthy or forgotten, remind me that I have been adopted into Your family forever, and nothing can undo that.
Teach me to walk as Your beloved child — secure in Your love, free from fear, and quick to extend that same love to others. Let my life reflect whose I am.
